Last week I was very privileged to receive a new book in the post all the way from Australia, it wasn’t just any old book and it isn’t even on sale yet, which is why I feel so privileged and very excited to be able to read it to my son. We already have My Food Allergy Friends other story books for children and my son loves reading them and learning about his food allergies. This new book ‘Thai’s New Friend At Kindy’ is perfect for my son who is now 27 months old, my son won’t be going to a kindy (nursery to us Brits) as we had a terrible experience at a nursery with the staff feeding him dairy after me spending weeks and weeks going through his food allergies with them but anyway my son goes to a wonderful childminder now and this book is also great if you are using a childminder.
As soon as I opened this book my son started looking for Thai’s Rabbie, my son actually has a very similar looking teddy but his is a dog and we call him ‘doggy’. At the beginning it explains what happens to Thai if he eats the food he is allergic too and my son pointed at the picture of poorly Thai and said awwwwww! It was great that I could use this picture to explain that’s what will happen to you if you eat dairy or soya. I love how this book goes through the usual steps of what happens at a kindy/nursery school including when it’s someone’s birthday and a cake is brought in to share. In this book Thai’s friend touches a food that she is allergic too and it explains the process of what happens including giving antihistamine and following her action plan. I love how interactive and engaging this book is. After the story, at the end of the book there’s great tips for dealing with food allergies, a quiz asking if Thai can eat the following foods (with pictures of the foods), it asks if we know the signs of an allergic reaction and in this book we get to learn a little about Thai and see some super cute pics! There’s a section for your child to fill in their fun facts about them and add some photos too, I am going to help my son choose some pictures of him to put in the book this week. There is also a recipe for Thai’s cake which he took to kindy and it can be kept in the freezer 🙂
This wonderful and very colourful story book for children is out October 9th 2015 and I would highly recommend it to any allergy parent, you can buy it online along with other food allergy story books direct from My Food Allergy Friends. Available to buy for those living in Australia, America, New Zealand, Canada and the UK.
My Food Allergy Friends was created by Jackie Nevard. Jackie’s son Thai has multiple food allergies which were diagnosed when he was just 9 months old. Thai who is the star of these wonderful story books is now age 6 and Jackie is on a mission to raise awareness about life threatening food allergies and to help educate other young children. Jackie has created some awesome resources for Thai’s New Friend At Kindy on her website which are available for childcare educators, teachers and caregivers.
Disclosure: I was sent this story book for the purpose of this review, all thoughts and words are my own.
Recently I have received a lot of questions on our Facebook page about the symptoms of cow’s milk protein allergy and I think it would be great if we can share our questions and support each other on this journey. I have created a group on Facebook so we all have somewhere we can discuss and support each other in regards to living with cow’s milk protein allergy. Please take the time to read the group description. It is a closed group so, only members can see and reply to posts.
