Since I can remember I have suffered with tonsillitis on a regular basis. Looking at my medical records, I first had tonsillitis at age two. I also suffered with recurrent ear infections as a child. When I was in my teens, the tonsillitis became more frequent, I would notice if i’d had a few late nights with not much sleep I would always get tonsillitis. I would go to the doctors who always prescribed me antibiotics, I’d take them and after around five days or so I’d start to feel better. I’d be struck with tonsillitis about 3-4 times a year, I just ‘got on with it’ that is until I had it 6 times in 12 months and then I’d had enough! Trying to look after a baby on your own with tonsillitis is not fun at all. I was also worried that my son would catch it, he’s been through more than enough with his cow’s milk protein allergy and soya intolerance, the last thing he needs is tonsillitis.
Now i’m an allergy parent, researching is something I do a lot, something I have had to do in order to try and figure out what is going on with my son (various doctors couldn’t help with his symptoms). I started researching what causes tonsillitis and I was shocked to come across a medical dictionary on Google books, which states that recurrent tonsillitis could be a symptom of dairy and wheat intolerance. I also read various blogs of peoples personal experience with recurrent tonsillitis and removing dairy and wheat from their diets. I discussed it with my mum who then informed me, I was constantly sick as a baby and I have always suffered with eczema. I was starting to piece together a full picture of my overall health, I went to the doctors with tonsillitis again on 4th February 2015. I told her what I had read online and she said oh yes (so casual) but the only way to know if it is that, is to remove dairy and wheat from your diet for six months and if you don’t get tonsillitis in the six months then it is a symptom of dairy and wheat intolerance. I couldn’t believe that in nearly 28 years, not one doctor has ever suggested this to me. I left the doctors with my antibiotics but I decided not to take them, I felt terrible as anyone who’s ever had tonsillitis will know, it really does leave you feeling very unwell. I wanted to put this dairy and wheat theory to the test, I hadn’t eaten yet that day and as my son has cow’s milk protein allergy I already had lots of dairy free foods in the kitchen, so I kept to a dairy and wheat free diet. The next day I woke up feeling a lot better, which was strange. usually if I don’t start my antibiotics for tonsillitis I start feeling worse. I didn’t eat any dairy or wheat that day and the following day I woke up and my tonsillitis had gone completely. I couldn’t believe it! I decided then, that I would go dairy and wheat free for 6 months to see what would happen. After a couple of weeks, I was less bloated, felt lighter and had more energy – things I never really knew were an issue for me, if I’m honest. It’s now 18th September 2015, so it has been over seven months since I have eaten any dairy or wheat and I am pleased to say that I haven’t had tonsillitis once. I feel so much healthier without it, it’s hard when eating out but it’s worth it to not have tonsillitis every couple of months.
If you are suffering with recurrent tonsillitis, I would recommend discussing the causes with your doctor before making any changes to your diet. Unfortunately I can’t find the link to the medial dictionary on Google books, where I read that tonsillitis can be the symptom of dairy and wheat intolerance, to share with you, but your doctor should be aware of this, as mine was.
